Nitrous Oxide Sedation

What is nitrous oxide sedation?

Nitrous oxide sedation is a method in which a patient remains alert, conscious and in control of their body throughout the dental examination.

Nitrous oxide is used to sedate a patient using two gases blended together, these gases are oxygen and nitrous oxide (N2O-O2). This gas is given to the patient through a mask that is placed over the patient’s nose, allowing them to breath the gas into their lungs.

The dose of nitrous oxide administered to a patient will differ depending on the size and weight of the patient, along with their history of past tolerance of the gas.Your dental professional will determine the correct dose for you.

What will I feel while under the effects of the nitrous oxide gas?

Nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as “laughing gas” because of the happy and pleasant feeling that people feel while under its effects.

Nitrous oxide numbs the pain of the procedure, while also helping to repress the gag reflex. People under its effects often have a “tingly” feeling over their hands, face and arms, along with flushing of the face.

The nitrous oxide gas is expelled from the patient’s system after the surgery by flushing using pure oxygen. There are no lasting effects.

Is nitrous oxide safe?

Nitrous oxide is considered the safest sedative in dentistry, and has been used successfully for over 100 years.

It does not cause any allergies and the level of sedation is controlled easily and quickly by the dental professional. The sedation can be stopped and reversed easily at any time during the procedure.

Who will need nitrous oxide for sedation?

For people who face extreme stress at a trip to the dentist, nitrous oxide is a fast and effective way to decrease anxiety. Nitrous oxide will also numb the teeth and gums, however will not replace the need for local anaesthetic where necessary.

What should I do before my dental appointment where nitrous oxide is used?

Fasting will not be necessary before your appointment, however it is strongly advised to avoid heavy meals or the consumption of milk products. Also advise your dentist if you have any breathing problems.

It you are not comfortable with the placement of a mask over your face, also alert your dentist.
